LG Display introduced a prototype display that can expand up to 50%. How notes Tom’s Hardware, is the world’s largest «stretchable» display, which almost doubled the record of its predecessor (it was +20%).
The prototype, shown below in the image, has a 12-inch screen — with the ability to expand to 18 inches without losing image quality at 100 pixels per inch.
Unlike other concepts, the LG display can be bent, folded and generally transformed into any shape. In total, the screen can be stretched «up to 10,000 times without any damage».
According to LG, the technology is based on a «special silicon material» commonly used in contact lenses, but it has been slightly improved for greater flexibility. Additionally, the company used a new wiring structure and a micro-LED light source.
In the future, the technology can be used in the design of clothing, touch panels of electric vehicles, etc. LG also showed a concept in which a stretched display is attached directly to a firefighter’s uniform and displays information in real time.
