Linus Torvalds criticized the current state of AI technologies: «It is 90% marketing and only 10% reality»

Linus Torvalds, the creator of the Linux kernel, sharply criticized the current state of artificial intelligence development. In his opinion, the hype around AI is «90% marketing and only 10% actual reality». He expressed this opinion during interview at the Open Source Summit in Vienna.

The developer called modern generative AI services an interesting development of machine learning technologies that will eventually change the world. At the same time, he expressed dissatisfaction with the «hype» cycle that fuels too many AI-related initiatives and contributes to the incredibly high market valuations of companies such as Nvidia.

Torvalds dislikes the hype cycle so much that he doesn’t even want to get into it. In fact, he ignores everything related to artificial intelligence, although he recognizes that the situation may change dramatically in a few years.

According to Torvalds, in 5 years, generative algorithms and machine learning technologies will become much more useful and interesting. Then the whole world will be able to understand how AI can actually be used and what daily tasks it can «accelerate».

Torvalds agreed that ChatGPT and similar services are a great demonstration of the technology and are already being used in many areas for various tasks, such as graphic design. «But I really hate the hype cycle,» he emphasizes.
