The gothic horror film “Nosferatu” has crossed the $100 million mark at the box office on its 10th day of release — a milestone that has been rare for art-house films in post-pandemic times.
It should be noted that the production budget of “Nosferatu” was $50 million, but right from its debut, the film exceeded market experts’ box office forecasts. Moreover, critics have rated the film quite highly, calling it one of the best of 2024 (“Nosferatu” was released at the end of December, but it’s only been showing in Ukraine since January 2).
“Nosferatu” is yet another remake of the eponymous silent film from the 1920s, telling the story of a young woman and a vampire who falls in love with her. Bill Skarsgård stars as Count Orlok, Nicholas Hoult plays Thomas Hutter, and Lily-Rose Depp is his wife, Alice. The cast also includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe (who, by the way, also played Count Orlok and actor Max Schreck in the 2000 film “Shadow of the Vampire”).
“Eggers and his team have done a truly outstanding job. This is a movie where everything works perfectly with the ambiance, atmosphere, light and shadow, color filling the frame, mise-en-scène, sound, and more. It’s no exaggeration to say that in its form, particularly visually (which is super important for the art of cinema), ‘Nosferatu’ is a perfect film, where everything serves the story and ensures it’s realized to the highest quality in its declared genre,” wrote ITC.ua film critic Denis Fedoruk in his review.
“Moana 2” meanwhile continues its remarkable box office run. To date, the Disney animated film has earned about $960 million and is gearing up to join the list of billion-dollar films of 2024 alongside “Inside Out 2” and the third “Deadpool”. “Mufasa” has also adjusted its positions, despite a modest start, currently clocking in at $476 million at the box office (while its $200 million production budget requires it to continue holding them).
The musical “Wicked” from Universal has now officially become the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in the history of global cinema with a worldwide box office of $681 million, and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has brought in about $319 million, pushing the franchise’s total earnings to $1 billion (a sequel, as expected, is already in the works).
