NVIDIA CEO tells when AI will stop «hallucinating» and gives a pickup truck lesson

Turns out, NVIDIA has given everyone a million times discount. Jensen Huang talked about when to expect honest AI, the role of the company in it, and how he convinced his wife to marry him.

When AI Will Stop Lying

Jensen Huang believes that the artificial intelligence industry will not be able to solve the problem of “hallucinations” – when AI creates information to fill gaps in knowledge – for several more years. He discussed this and other topics during an interview at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Huang talked about the directions of artificial intelligence development. The first, preliminary training, he compared to entering college. During it, artificial intelligence simply collects data and transforms it into answers. “This is a very important stage, but it is not enough.” The second is post-training with deep immersion in a specific skill through “reinforced learning through feedback from humans, through feedback from AI, generation of synthetic data, multi-vector learning, and so on—there are plenty of ways.”

The third direction in the development of artificial intelligence is testing over time, which Jensen Huang also calls “thinking.” This is much more complicated since AI now breaks down the problem step by step to find a solution. It may have to repeat, and sometimes simulate different outcomes, especially if the answer is not predictable. “We call this thinking, and the longer you think, possibly, the better the answer might be. However, for now, despite all these technologies,” notes Huang, “we still cannot fully trust the answers AI provides.”

“Today we have the best answers we can get, but we [still] reach the point where the answer may not be the best we can provide, and you still have to decide whether it is a ‘hallucination’ or if it makes sense, is it smart or not? We need to reach the point where you substantially trust the answer you received. … I think we can do this in a few years, and in the meantime, we need to continue increasing [the power of] our computations.”

Huge Discount

Jensen Huang highlighted NVIDIA’s role in the development of artificial intelligence. He noted that if not for the company’s efforts, processors for artificial intelligence would have been a million times more expensive:

“We took the marginal costs of computing and reduced them by a million times. … When the cost of something is reduced by a million times, your habits fundamentally change… This is the biggest contribution NVIDIA has ever made—to make the use of machines for exhaustive study of a huge amount of data something that researchers wouldn’t even have to think about. That’s how machine learning gained popularity.”

“Over the last 10 years, I have given you a million times discount. It’s practically free!” — said Huang.

Pickup Line

Also at the event, Jensen Huang was asked for advice for young people on when to start their own business. The interviewer added, “Besides, you promised your wife Lori that by the age of 30 you would start a company,” Huang replied, “That was my pickup line. I didn’t mean it.”

“To make sure she would eventually marry me, I told her that when I turn 30… I would become CEO. I had no idea what I was talking about — and then we got married. That’s all the advice I’m going to give to entrepreneurs. That’s it.”
