The Witcher 4 promises not just a new story, but a completely different fighting style — Ciri will not be a tank like Geralt.
CD Projekt Red has already said that Ciri will be the main character, and it is logical that it will not be 1:1 like Geralt. During the trailer discussion Pavel Burza, Senior Communications Manager at CDPR, drew attention to the movements of the young witch
«You don’t see Geralt doing these things… He’s nimble, but he feels like a block, in some sense. She’s like, liquid, compared to him», — says Burza.
The trailer shows Ciri pinning the monster to the ground. She does a flip to deliver the final blow, rather than a «goes for the». Her fighting style emphasizes maneuverability, quick combinations, and acrobatics rather than strength and endurance like Geralt’s.
Game director Sebastian Kalemba explains that Ciri’s fighting style evolved along with her in the «wolf philosophy» style:
«She moves like she was raised by wolves in Kaer Morhen… that comes from her personality, her posture and stuff», — adds Kalemba.
Whereas Geralt relied on endurance and a cautious approach, Ciri will rely on speed, dodges, and surprise attacks. This makes sense: she is much smaller and lighter, which means she can use this to her advantage
«Her body type is much different than what you expect in terms of Geralt. He’s more blocky, she’s very nimble, and she’s smaller, which lets her use that to her advantage, because she’s more agile», — the developers emphasize.
In The Witcher 3, players played as Ciri for a while, where they could already feel a different fighting style — more dynamic. She could teleport during attacks, and her sudden attacks towards the enemy were very fast. Also, Ciri used one sword instead of two, like Geralt, but the situation has already changed in The Witcher 4 trailer.
It looks like we’re going to see more rolls, dodges, midair strikes, and more acrobatics in general. Instead of long sword combos, short and sharp combos are possible, and less armor will provide more mobility. In addition, the role of teleportation and other magical abilities will likely not be in the last place.
CDPR also confirmed that Geralt will still appear in the game, but his role will be much smallerthan in the previous installments. This is a logical step, as «the old wolf» had to fade into the background to make way for a new era of the Witcher. Players are promised that The Witcher 4 will be bigger than the previous part, а the plot will be independent of the Netflix series.
