The future of gaming: Sony and AMD team up to bring artificial intelligence to games

Mark Cerny, chief architect of the PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro, has announced an in-depth collaboration between Sony and AMD in the field of machine learning technologies for video games. The project is codenamed «Amethyst», combining AMD’s red color and PlayStation’s blue.

The companies already have successful experience of cooperation — PS5 and PS5 Pro GPUs are based on AMD RDNA 2 architecture. PS5 Pro features PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) technology to improve image clarity and frame rates.

Sony has introduced 37-minute presentationwhere Cerny spoke about the technical aspects of the PS5 Pro and the multi-year project with AMD. The companies have identified two main areas of development:

  • The first is to create a better machine learning architecture that can efficiently process lightweight convolutional neural networks for game graphics.
  • The second area is the development of high-quality convolutional neural networks for graphics. Both companies will be able to use these architectures and training strategies to improve the visuals of games and expand ray tracing capabilities.

«Amethyst is not limited to PlayStation technology. We are committed to supporting the widespread adoption of machine learning across devices,» Cherney emphasized in an interview with IGN.

The results of the collaboration may appear in the next generation of PlayStation consoles. According to Cerny, the development of a new console usually takes about four years. However, he evaded a direct answer about the timing of a potential PS6 in an interview with IGN.
