Director of «Nosferatu» Robert Eggers prefers real sets and effects in his films. But sometimes this creates extreme inconvenience.
During the filming, Eggers used specially trained rats. A lot of rats. But he didn’t take into account one of their biological characteristics.
«There are 5000 real rats. If there are rats in the foreground, they are real rats, and they become less frequent and become computer rats in the background. They were well trained. And the rats that were on Emma Corrine… I didn’t know that rats were incontinent. And that’s why the stench was crazy»,” the director explained during a Q&A session after the exclusive screening of the film in Los Angeles.
Robert Eggers was referring to the frequent and short urination of rats. These small animals urinate almost constantly in short, second bursts. So the stench around them is not surprising. There is even a myth that rats and mice do not have bladders — but this is not true.
So Emma Corrine seems to have received an unpleasant surprise on the set. It’s not known who else in the movie was affected in a similar way — perhaps Lily-Rose Depp? Moreover, rats are not the only smelly thing in the movie. Last year, Eggers said that Bill Skashgård’s Earl Orlok is the exact opposite of Edward Cullen’s vampire from «Twilight»: «Creepy Stinking Corpse».
«Nosferatu» has already been seen by the first viewers Critics were extremely impressed so the movie promises to be good, despite the flavorful details. In addition to the actors mentioned above, the film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney. The film will be released in Ukraine on January 1, 2025.
