AMD processors with 3D V-Cache are known as the best for gaming, but no chip with a powerful integrated graphics card (APU) has it. This may change in the next generation.
Zhangzhonghao, a well-known hardware whistleblower from Chiphell, says that 3D V-Cache-related settings are mentioned in the manual for one of ASUS’ WRX90 motherboards. These boards do not support Ryzen or EPYC (as for the latter, at least officially). Therefore, the insider suggests that 3D V-Cache will be available on Threadripper chips. So far, no AMD Threadripper HEDT processor has had better additional L3 cache.
The source also says that 3D V-Cache will be available for custom processors with an advanced built-in graphics card. However, according to him, at least initially, this feature may be limited to high-end laptops and will not make it to desktop chips. Here’s what the report says:
«Today I saw the news that the word Vcache appeared in the BIOS manual for Asus TRX motherboards, and then I asked the suppliers — it’s really going to happen. In addition, the next generation is going to add 3D to the APU (to boost the CPU and GPU). The technology and costs are already there, but the current news is that it’s limited to laptops only, and only for the Halo» level.
AMD 3D V-Cache technology and X3D processors equipped with it have shown their effectiveness primarily in games. Probable new processors will show its effectiveness in server and computing workloads, as well as in thin premium laptops. Desktop users are currently waiting for the new AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which will be officially available tomorrow, November 7.
