Asus comments on damage to video cards with PCIe Q-Release connector — the defect does not affect the operation of cards

Asus motherboard connector PCIe Slot Q-Release Slim leaves a physical mark on video cards, but this is not a problem, according to Asus.

Recently enthusiasts noticed a slight physical deformation of the video card contact pad on new Asus motherboards with a PCIe connector that allows the card to be inserted and locked without any screws or buttons. The defect did not affect the operation of the video cards, but it was a concern.

Other reports have noted that the mount is not always easy to use — it may require extra strength. In particular, it was mentioned wrote Andreas Schilling from HardwareLuxx, who reported the first damage to the RTX 5090 in the Q-Release Slim slot.

Asus said in a statement that users of the slot have nothing to worry about. A simple instruction should be followed to reduce the likelihood of wear and tear and scratches. Even if they do appear — it will not affect the performance of the video card.

«In our internal testing and evaluation of the extremely small number of reported cases, we have not found any damage to the motherboard or graphics card that would affect functionality and/or performance. However, it is important to emphasize that any type of attached PCIe card will show signs of use and wear markings after 60 continuous insertions and removals. Additionally, if installation and removal are not performed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, the likelihood of scratches and/or wear may increase. Despite this, we found no impact on the functionality of either the graphics card or the motherboard.

For those who are currently using ASUS motherboards with the PCIe Q-Release Slim design, there is no cause for concern. Just follow the official uninstallation instructions to avoid potential damage. Note that this requires minimal effort and excessive force should not be used».

Asus told us what tests it puts video cards through. This includes a temperature and humidity chamber (-40℃ to 85℃ for almost 48 hours), vibration tests along the XYZ axes, shock tests with a load of up to 50G, installation tests, and 40 insertion and removal tests (25 times the industry standard).

«Our testing has passed PCIe Slot industry standards, including 40 insertion and removal tests with no deviations. In some instances of external testing, 60 inserts with improper methods cause additional wear and tear, making usage marks more obvious. Incorrect angles and excessive force may cause further scratches, but will not affect the functionality of the graphics card or motherboard».

Asus pledges its full responsibility and to resolve problems if users encounter them. In such cases, the company asks for help and advice.
