At the AMD booth, journalists found systems with FSR 4 demo — first impressions of the technology

At CES 2025, AMD provided little information about FSR 4. A single slide confirmed that the technology, based on machine learning, will be implemented in the latest Call of Duty and Ratchet & Clank.

The YouTube channel Hardware Unboxed found on the AMD stand demo systems with FSR 4. They feature Radeon 9000 series graphics cards — clearly from the RX 9070 series.

However, AMD did not equip the demos with FPS counters, leaving only the ability to assess the quality of FSR4, but not performance. The company assures that FSR 4 focuses on image quality, not frame generation.

Comparison of FSR 3.1 and FSR 4 / Hardware Unboxed

Hardware Unboxed compared FSR 3.1 and FSR 4 in performance mode (2x increase, scaling 1080p to 4K). According to the channel, improvements are evident in the quality of moving objects, color reproduction, and rendering of transparent elements — areas where previous versions of FSR did not perform very well.

Although the quality of FSR 4 still does not match the quality of DLSS, the improvements in technology can be considered significant. This is particularly noticeable in visual effects such as confetti, which no longer had visible streaks. Crowd details and Ratchet’s fur appear more detailed and natural. Also, flickering was noticeably reduced, and the texture of the carpet looked significantly better.

Hardware Unboxed states that they would prefer games with FSR 4 enabled, although there is currently no information on performance metrics or latency. Hopefully, AMD will discuss these aspects soon at the promised separate presentation dedicated to graphics cards. Interestingly, the demonstration is called “AMD Graphics Research AI Upscaling,” not an FSR4 demonstration.
