«Back to the Future 4»: Universal and Robert Zemeckis regularly talk about the movie, but have «different visions»

Director sci-fi movie series «Back to the Future» Robert Zemeckis says that he regularly communicates with Universal about the fourth film, but that he hasn’t reached a common vision with the studio.

Universal insists on a conventional version, while Zemeckis agrees exclusively to a film adaptation of his play «Back to the Future: The Musical». On the podcast «Happy Sad Confused» (via Variety) when asked how often the studio offers him to make a sequel, the director joked «oh, every 6 months».

«Can’t we think of anything? Can’t we do something?», — Zemeckis quotes the studio, adding: «There are different things that could work. However, remaking or making Back to the Future 4 — is not in the cards».

The director, in turn, regularly insists on a version of the musical, but says that Universal does not understand». (The play «Back to the Future: The Musical» has been shown on Broadway more than 500 times and won a lot of awards, but is now closing, so it’s no wonder Zemeckis wants to extend its life on the screen).

As for the movie «Back to the Future 4», the star of the original franchise, Michael J. Fox, who played Marty McFly, said in an interview with Variety last year that there is no need for a remake or sequel to:

«Do what you want. It’s your movie. I’ve already been paid», — Fox joked, adding seriously: «I don’t think there’s a need for that. I think Zemeckis made a pretty good point. Why the reboot? Are you going to clarify something? Are you going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it».

At the same time, Fox’s colleague Christopher Lloyd, who played the mad scientist Emmett «Doc» Brown, seems more open to the idea of a sequel:

«I would like a sequel, but I think Bob Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg feel they have told the story in three episodes. However, if someone has a brilliant idea that would justify a fourth movie, why not?»
