Elden Ring outsold all Dark Souls combined at the time of its release — 28.6 million copies sold

In the press release FromSoftware reports that since its release in 2022, Elden Ring has sold over 28.6 million copies, making it the company’s most popular game.

The studio also notes that the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion sold over 5 million copies just in the first three days after its release this summer. With this new information, video game market researcher Daniel Ahmad reported that the game has exceeded the total number of copies sold of all Dark Souls.

“Fun Fact: Before Elden Ring was released, the entire Dark Souls series had been sold in a total of 27 million copies. Now just Elden Ring has exceeded that figure.”

The Dark Souls series includes three main games and six DLCs and had a lot of time to sell—the first game was released in 2011 and the third in 2016. According to Bandai Namco’s 2024 information bulletin, all of this amounted to 37 million sold just after Elden Ring appeared. Considering that, you can imagine its future success.

FromSoftware’s most successful game shows no signs of slowing down. The new standalone co-op release Elden Ring Nightreign, which is set to debut in 2025, is likely to strengthen the fan base and draw more players to what can now be considered a franchise.
