Electric car instead of generator: lifecell tests an alternative way to power base stations in blackouts

Mobile operator lifecell has started using electric vehicles as autonomous power sources for its base stations. This solution has significant advantages over traditional generators due to its increased efficiency and cost-effectiveness. The pilot project is currently being tested by the company’s engineers in Vinnytsia.

The electric vehicle is equipped with an 87 kWh battery and has a connection capacity of up to 7 kW. It can provide autonomous power to the base station for up to 40 hours. During the tests, it was found that with a load of 3.5 to 7 kW, it can operate continuously for 17 to 20 hours. The use of an electric vehicle to power base stations can reduce electricity costs by 70-75% compared to gasoline generators, while requiring minimal maintenance.

This solution is also more cost-effective than stationary lithium batteries, which are usually used for backup power. The main advantages include mobility, longer battery life, and ease of connection, as the electric vehicle can be quickly connected to most base stations.

This solution is especially suitable for use in urban environments, as the electric vehicle is silent, allowing it to be used at night, even in densely populated areas. In addition, it is an environmentally friendly option compared to conventional generators, as it does not pollute the air with exhaust gases.

«The use of electric vehicles is bringing us closer to an effective model for ensuring communication during long power outages. To date, we have conducted three tests at two base stations. The solution looks promising, but still requires further testing and calculations, given the high cost of electric vehicles. Therefore, we are currently analyzing how feasible it will be to scale it up,» said Konstantin Sotnikov, Head of the lifecell mobile network operation department.
