First look at Project Moohan, an augmented reality headset jointly developed by Samsung and Google (video)

Samsung and Google have joined forces to create augmented reality glasses. This was announced by the head of Samsung’s mobile division TM Roh. Currently, there is not much information about this project, even the approximate release date is unknown. Roh only noted that Samsung and Google «will strive to achieve the desired quality and readiness as soon as possible».

This announcement comes after a high-profile presentation Orion – the first Meta augmented reality glasses. These glasses will not be sold to consumers, but journalist Alex Heath called them an «impressive demo version of».

The news about AR glasses from Samsung and Google also came after the announcement of the Project Moohan mixed reality headset. The headset runs on Android XR, which Google recently announced for headsets and smart glasses. Bloomberg reports that the «augmented reality glasses will eventually be launched as part of the company’s efforts to co-develop the Android XR» operating system.

During the Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung demonstrated the Project Moohan headset and allowed journalists to photograph it for the first time.

At first glance, the headset looks a bit like a version of Apple’s Vision Pro with a hint of Meta’s discontinued Quest Pro.

The headset, which Samsung is developing in partnership with Google, runs Android XR, an OS designed specifically for headsets and smart glasses.

Journalist Victoria Sohn already tested the headset and platform last year and described it as a «mix of Meta Quest 3 and Vision Pro»:

«I was guided through the gesture control process, shown how to select items and how to tap the side to open the app menu. There is an eye calibration process that is very similar to that of Vision Pro. If you want, you can switch to immersive mode to watch YouTube and Google TV on a distant mountain. I can open programs, resize them, and place them in different parts of the room. I’ve done this before. It just has a Google» flavor to it now.

Samsung is planning to launch Project Moohan for developers first, but the device will not be available to consumers immediately.
