Found the wrong guy? Peter Todd is hiding because of an HBO documentary that called him the creator of bitcoin

Peter Todd, a 39-year-old Canadian software developer who played a key role in the early creation of bitcoin, was furious when he was named Satoshi Nakamoto in the documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery directed by Cullen Hoback.

The Canadian cryptographer and computer scientist is forced to go into hiding due to fears for his life after the release of the film on HBO, in which he was allegedly exposed as the inventor of bitcoin (BTC), known as Satoshi Nakamoto. The developer said this in an interview with Wired.

Todd also claims that the director of the movie, Cullen Hoback, used questionable evidence and then came to a false conclusion. Previously, Todd has repeatedly denied that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, and did it again on the eve of the movie’s release.

As stated in the movie and confirmed by various sources, Todd often made joking statements: «Me — Satoshi». These words are compared to the famous phrase «I am Spartacus» from the 1960 movie of the same name, where captured soldiers claimed to be Spartacus one by one to protect the real hero.

As Wired writes, Todd agreed to take part in the documentary because he believed that the film would focus on the history of Bitcoin rather than trying to expose its creator. Todd believes that he was wrongly labelled Satoshi, and now his life is being threatened:

«Obviously, falsely accusing ordinary people of possessing vast amounts of wealth puts them at risk of being robbed or kidnapped. This is not only a stupid question, but also a dangerous one. Satoshi obviously did not want to be found, and no one should help those who try to do so.

Cullen Hoback takes a different view. According to him, Todd and the others exaggerate the situation, and the attempt to find Satoshi did not pose any real threat to those who appeared in the movie. In addition, Hobak said Todd denies that he is Satoshi too much.

«Peter Todd tells Wired that he has gone underground. He then mocks Wired for covering this narrative by appearing on stage today. As the author of the article aptly put it: «Todd’s trolling not only isolates him, but also exposes him».

As a reminder, after the Wired interview was published, Todd wrote that the information about his hiding is «exaggerated».
