Intel has released processors in cheap boxes to bring down the price by a few dollars

More affordable versions of Intel processors have gone on sale in South Korea. We are not talking about the latest Core 200 chips, but about the previous generation models — the 14th generation Intel Core i5.

According to the South Korean price aggregator Danawa, three official distributors of Intel processors in the country have announced the release of a special edition of packaging that should reduce the cost of products. The official name of the new packaging is Value Pack (Genuine), which is likely to prevent doubts about the authenticity of the product. The new packaging is designed for two models: Core i5-14400F and i5-14600KF, and apparently there is also a variant with a bundled cooler.

«This is a very significant moment, as this is the first time the official Intel Value Pack is being launched in Korea. We are pleased to offer more affordable pricing while maintaining the same warranty period and criteria as our regular official products. We expect that with this launch, more consumers will be able to upgrade their PCs without incurring additional costs,» the statement said.

The main savings are achieved through more compact packaging. Instead of the usual colorful graphic elements, the box will only have a sticker. In addition, there is no Intel logo on the box, only the processor itself.

Perhaps this new packaging is an intermediate option between the standard boxed and tray (for OEMs) versions of CPUs. Given that most users throw away the box anyway, this approach may be justified in order to reduce costs.

In terms of prices, the lowest price for the Core i5-14600KF in the tray variant is 261200 won ($182.2). The newly released Value Pack version starts at 284540 won ($198.5), while the original boxed version sells for 295700 won ($206.2). Thus, the new packaging option is cheaper than the standard boxed version (by $7.7), but still more expensive than the tray version.
