«Mickey 17» earned $53 million in its first weekend, but the $118 million budget poses problems

The dystopian sci-fi comedy «Mickey 17» earned $53.3 million worldwide in its first weekend, but its total box office should reach $275-300 million given its $118 million budget (+ $80 million for marketing) to break even.

Reviews at «Mickey 17» are decent, but not impressive: the film received a «B» on CinemaScore, while on Rotten Tomatoes it received 79% of journalists and 73% of the audience.

«If Mickey 17 had cost, say, $50 million — enough for an R-rated social satire with an arthouse flare — the film would be doing well at this stage of its theatrical run. However, given its realistic budget, it needs to make between $275 million and $300 million worldwide to break even when it’s shown on the big screen», — writes Rebecca Rubin of Variety.

«Mickey 17» — is a new creation by the director of the Oscar-winning «Vermin», which adapts the novel by Edward Ashton «Mickey 7». Robert Pattinson plays a kind of «expendable»: a rookie robot sent on a mission to colonize the icy world of Niflheim, and each time «reprinted» after his death with most of his memories intact. After the next «restoration of» (in the movie, the number was increased from 7 to 17), Miki begins to realize his differences from the rest of the workers.

«”Mickey 17″ — an absolute must-see for anyone who considers themselves a connoisseur of the art of moving pictures», — wrote ITC.ua film reviewer Denys Fedoruk in his review.
