The series «Shogun», which became the record holder for awards at this year’s «Emmy», is confidently approaching its second season — Justin Marks, the show’s co-creator, said that the scripts have been officially completed, while filming is tentatively scheduled for the fall.
«We have completed 10 episodes and are currently working on the finale to figure out how to shoot it all. I hope the audience will be surprised by our ideas right from the first episode. Let’s start and see what stories it will lead us to in the future», — Marx said during a conversation with Deadline at the Critics Choice Awards.
Based on the 1975 novel by James Clavell, «Shogun» tells the story of English sailor John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), who is shipwrecked in Japan and stays there, learning the traditions and laws of the new country; and Lord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), who confronts his political rivals in the Council of Regents.
Initially, «Shogun» was planned as a limited series, but its success led to the announcement of two more seasons at once. In fact, the show brought the creators and the cast a bunch of prestigious awards — four «Golden Globes» і a record 18 awards at «Emmy-2024»including Best Drama Series, as well as recognizing the acting work of Sanada, Anna Sawai (Toda Mariko) and Tadanobu Asano (Kashigi Yabushige).
The first season closely followed Clavell’s book, but given that the sequel will not have any source material, the writers have some freedom to experiment creatively. At the same time, the team emphasized that they continue to work closely with Sanada, who is also the show’s executive producer, to maintain historical and cultural accuracy. And, in fact, we are expecting announcements about newcomers to the cast, given the departure of some bright characters in the final episodes.
The second season of «Shogun» is tentatively scheduled for the fall, but it is unlikely to be released before 2027 (the first season, for comparison, took a year to shoot, plus time for post-production).
«We are targeting the fall», — Sanada said in response to a question Variety about the start of filming. «We have half of the cast of the first season left and the same half will come. We are now looking for the best candidates».
