The director of «Alien: Romulus» considers his movie «a big hit» and is looking for a worthy story to continue

Fede Alvarez and 20th Century Studios are “extremely interested” in a sequel to “Alien: Romulus”, while the director is already searching for the “right story” along with co-writer Rodo Sayagues.

“The process we’re in right now is the search for a worthy story. We wouldn’t want to make a mistake and shoot a sequel just because the first movie was a big hit,” Alvarez said in an interview with io9 (via comicbook).

“Alien: Romulus” debuted in theaters in August and earned about $350 million worldwide — making it the second highest-grossing film in the franchise, only behind “Prometheus” (which Ridley Scott recently called a “failure”). Critical reviews were generally quite decent, while audiences had mixed reactions — there were questions about the controversial use of CGI for reviving the late Ian Holm and a number of references to previous parts of “Alien”.

20th Century Studios announced a sequel to “Romulus” and Alvarez’s return to directing already in October, but it’s unlikely that the film will be released in the near future — and the director’s comments on the appropriateness of a sequel without a worthy story somewhat cast doubt on the reality of this venture. However, fans of the franchise will be able to see the xenomorph again in the first series from the Alien universe on Hulu by the summer of 2025.
