Robert Eggers, director of «Witch» and «Nosferatu», will create a new version of the fantasy musical «Labyrinth». This was announced by insider Jeff Snyder.
The original film was directed by Jim Henson, and the puppets for it were created by his Creature Shop workshop. The plot centers on 16-year-old Sarah, played by Jennifer Connelly, who embarks on a journey through a magical labyrinth to save her younger brother from the Goblin King Jareth, played by David Bowie.
The film did not have much success at the box office and among critics, but later gained cult status due to its combination of fairy tale narrative with dark aesthetics, original characters and charismatic performance by Bovey. Henson’s previous film «The Dark Crystal» had a similar fate.
«The Labyrinth» may be the first non-R-rated film in Eggers’ filmography. The director’s gothic style can provide a fresh take on a classic story while retaining its iconic elements.
Previous attempts to create a sequel were unsuccessful. In 2016, screenwriter Nicole Perlman was working on a sequel, and Fede Alvarez («Alien: Romulus»). In 2020, the project was led by Scott Derrickson, who wrote the script with Maggie Levine.
To recap, the remake of «Nosferatu» by Robert Eggers liked by critics and received 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and 83 points on Metacritic.
