The HR manager of a technology company from Shanghai «earned» $2.2 million in 8 years by hiring non-existent employees and misappropriating their salaries.
As noted by OddityCentral According to a report by the Shanghai Prosecutor’s Office, Yang joined the company in 2014 and was responsible for recruiting and hiring employees for various departments. Interestingly, no one checked his actions, so he decided to make some extra money on this «— he opened accounts for fictitious employees and linked the salary payments to them, which he eventually took for himself. Over the course of 8 years, Yang «hired» 22 non-existent employees, using names such as Xiao Sun, Xiao Li, and others.
Unfortunately for Yang, in 2022, someone from the company noticed the attendance record of one of the “Xiao Suns” and reported that he had never actually seen him at work. Investigators easily tracked down the manager, who eventually confessed to stealing about 16 million yuan ($2.2 million)
He was sentenced to 10 years and 2 months in prison, deprivation of political rights for 1 year, and a fine for embezzlement. Yang returned $150,000 to the company, and his family added another $165,000, but of course, this is only a small part of what was stolen over 8 years.
