At the Screen Junkies event (via GamesRadar), in response to the question of which movie he would erase from the history of cinema, Wood answered: «Charlie and the Chocolate Factory» Tim Burton. According to the actor, the director’s version of «destroyed the book and the original movie» (the 1971 film with Gene Wilder).
«Tim Burton’s version of Willy Wonka in the movie is disgusting and horrible,» Wood says. «There is nothing pure or beautiful about it».
At the same time, Elijah admits that the decision to take on the production was at least «a bold move», although Burton also perceived it as «too much in his subject matter». Indeed, the film, starring Johnny Depp as the eccentric chocolatier, offered a slightly different version of the character, making him less charming and more reserved, and it also made references to the protagonist’s harsh past.
Interestingly, the critics gave Charlie and the Chocolate Factory «Burton — a fairly good rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the film currently holding 83%, while the audience seemed to agree with Wood, as gave him only 51% of the vote.
