For the first time in 15 years, the cult DreamWorks franchise returns to the screens — «Shrek 5» has received its first teaser. And it was criticized (partially).
In 14 seconds, the video showed a new adult character — the daughter of Shrek and Fiona, voiced by Zendaya. She looks like a typical teenage ogre, and the whole teaser evokes «buzzer wobble». The short video did not reveal the whole plot, but showed Shrek in a latex suit.
The network drew attention to the wrong color of the teenage ogre’s eyes. Shrek and Fiona had three children: two sons with brown eyes and a girl with blue eyes. It appears that the designers have forgotten this detail in 15 years, but most likely they will fix it in the future.
In general, users had a mixed reaction to the teaser. Not everyone likes the TikTok atmosphere of the video. The franchise was revered for being a classic all these years, not for fleeting trends.
«Everything in this teaser — is a terrible meme with a TikTok reference to get the alpha generation interested. I know that the main target audience now is snotty kids with iPads, not adults who grew up with movies, but it’s disappointing», — write on social media.
Although many users criticized the characters’ appearance, especially Shrek’s eyes and Fiona’s face, not all of them did. Some wrote that «the new character designs are really not that bad». Besides, this is only a teaser, so their appearance may still undergo changes.
«Shrek looks like a completely different ogre. Like Fiona who remarried or something, I hope it’s just a temporary design», — the user writes in Reddit.
Meanwhile, our favorite actors will appear in «Shrek 5» again: Mike Myers will voice Shrek, Cameron Diaz will voice Fiona, Eddie Murphy will lend his voice to Donkey once more, and Zendaya, as mentioned earlier, will voice Shrek’s daughter. It is not yet known whether «Puss in Boots» Antonio Banderas will return. He was not on the list of actors who participated in the voice acting of the teaser.
How Zendaya found time for «Shrek 5» — is a mystery. Last year, she starred in two movies («Dune: Part 2» і «Rivals»), and in 2025 its schedule is even tighter: «Euphoria», «Odyssey» by Christopher Nolan, «Spider-Man 4» і «Dune: The Messiah».
Fans of «Shrek» have been waiting for the sequel since 2016, when screenwriter Michael McCullers said he was working on the story. The film was planned to be released in 2019 but was postponed. Only in 2023, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri said he wanted to bring back the original cast. Eddie Murphy confirmed his participation in the project, as well as spoke about the Donkey spinoff.
The movie is due to be released in December 2026, not as planned in July of the same year. It is expected that «Shrek 5» will become a major Christmas hit.
